Overview

The Mugu-Jumla Wilderness Trek is a relatively unexplored trekking trail in Karnali Province of Nepal. The trail is a section of the ancient salt trade route used by the locals of Jumla and surrounding areas to trade with Tibet via Namja Pass of Mugu. The trek passes through ancient settlements offering you a rare opportunity to experience culture, tradition and lifestyle of Mugumpa people, after who the district get its name, found nowhere else in Nepal. The people are friendly and welcoming. Their main occupation is farming, animal husbandry and trade with Tibet. The trail passes through beautiful villages like Pulu, Kimri, Dolphu on Mugu side and Khaldik and Talphi on Jumla side. You trek through ancient villages, terraced fields, ridges, alpine grasslands, glacial lakes, and high passes. You have the trail all to yourself on most of the days as this trail lies in relatively unexplored groups of Nepal. The trek begins from Talcha Airport in Mugu districts and follows Mugu Karnali – one of the tributaries of the mighty Karnali, passing by the settlements of Pulu, Kimri and Dolphu. From Dolphu, the trail descends to Dolphu Karnali River and climbs to the now deserted settlement of Wangri to climb to Malung Lek Pass. From the pass, the trail makes a descend but again climbs to the beautiful Chanya Lake and climbs another high pass from where you can have beautiful view of Patarasi and other peaks. Then you descend to the settlements of Khaldik and Talphi. From Talphi, you take a jeep to Jumla airstrip.
