Overview

The Nar-Phu Trek is named after twin villages of Nar and Phu which were inhabited by people from Tibet who moved southward in search of Beyul many centuries ago. The Nar-Phu region is peaceful and tranquil even though it is only a day's walk away from the hustle and bustle of the Annapurna Circuit trail. It is nestled in the Himalayas between the Annapurna and Manaslu regions which are already popular among foreigners. The trek begins with a drive to Chyamje from Kathmandu. On the first couple of days, you will continue on the busy Annapurna trail itself. From the village of Koto, however, the trail leaves the Annapurna Circuit by crossing Marshyangdi River and enters the narrow valley of Nar Khola. Leaving out of the gorge, it reaches Odar and continues through thickets of pine and rhododendrons to the picturesque village of Meta for the night halt. Meta is the winter settlement of the people of Nar. Next day, the trail passes through the difficult slopes of Kangaru Himal through the villages of Kyang to reach Phu. Wide array of chhortens and Mani walls serve as the precursor to Phu. Phu is a treasure trove of ancient Tibetan culture, tradition and artifacts. You will have one full day to explore the village and hike to the base camp of Himlung Himal. Next day, walk down the same trail toward Meta. Before reaching Meta, the trail branches out to your right and drops to the river which you will cross to reach a beautiful monastery at Nar Phedi. An easy walk next day will take you to Nar village for early lunch. Next day, you will trek all the way to Kangla Pass (5306m) and descend to the village of Ngawal and further to Manang. From Manang, drive to Kathmandu or you have the option of extending the trek to Jomsom via Tilicho and Mesokanto Pass or via Thorong La Pass and Muktinath.
