Overview

Overview

GHT-Mkalau is one of the most difficult sections of GHT as trekkers enter the Everest region from Makalu region, crossing two 6,000-meter passes. Caravan route to this section begins with a flight to Tumlingtar airport and a drive to the village of Num. It takes a walk of three days to meet the GHT at the village of Hongon passing through the villages of Pathibhara and Barun Dobhan in the Arun Valley. Arun Valley, which gets its name from Arun River that flows from Tibetan plateau, is rich in bio-diversity. The trail passes through beautiful settlements, picturesque terraced fields, thick forests, and numerous rivers and rivulets. From Hongon, the trail climbs to Molun Pokhari near Nepal-Tibet border and drops to beautiful pastureland before crossing a ridge which takes trekkers to Barun Valley and then to Makalu Base Camp. Form here, trekkers traverse to the Everest region crossing three high and challenging passes: Sherpini Col, West Col and Amphu Laptsa Col. From Dingboche, this section exits the Great Himalaya Trail. A walk of three days from here will take trekkers to Lukla from where they catch a flight to Kathmandu.
