Overview

The Langtang & Helambu section of GHT is begins from the town of Jalbire near Nepal’s border with China and follows Balephi River in the Jugal Himal region. Passing through beautiful Buddhist villages and largely unexplored area, the trail climbs to Panchpokhari, which translates into five lakes, one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhists alike. You can enjoy magnificent shaman dance if you happen to trek in the area during Janai Purnima festival which falls in the month of August. From Panchpokhari, the trail climbs uphill toward Tinpokhari, which translates into three lakes, and climbs Tilman Pass that gets its name from the famous British explorer Bill Tilman who was the first to walk through the pass. After crossing the pass, you will enter the magnificent Langtang Region and walk down to the ancient Kyanjin Gumba following Langtang Khola. A little below lies the village of Langtang which was washed away by an avalanche triggered by the 2015 earthquakes. But the villagers are back to their feet which demonstrates the great resilience of the local people. A walk of two days from Kayanjin Gumba will take you to Syafrubesi where this section ends. Kathmandu is only a half-day’s drive from here.
