Overview

The Dolpo section is the most interesting and adventurous section of Great Himalaya Trail. It connects remote Bon and Buddhist villages of the Upper Dolpo region through a trail in the rugged terrains beyond the Himalayas. Along with the amazing landscapes, the trail offers you with the opportunity to experience the unique, culture, tradition and lifestyle of the local people up-close. A journey in this section is like time traveling of sorts as you get to see a different world. This is a journey into wilderness. On most of the days, the only people you see is your trekking members and support staff. The trek is perfect for those who are fed up with the crowded trails and are looking for some hardcore walking far from the madding crowd. This trek joins the GHT at Kagbeni and climbs to Bhima Lojun Pass and enters the Dolpo region after crossing two passes Jungben and Niwas. It passes through the beautiful villages of Chharka Bhot and Chapchu and crosses Chan La pass to enter the twin villages of Dho and Tarap. It then crosses two 5,000 meter passes – Numa La and Baga La – and reaches Ringmo on the banks of the majestic Phoksundo Lake. It then exits the GHT at a place called Polam and continues along Suligad River, which drains Phoksundo Lake, to Dunai and climbs to Juphal airstrip from where you take a flight to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
