Overview

The Kailash Mansarovar trip is a popular travel exerience for pilgrims, nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The Kailash-Mansarovar region is a popular pilgrimage of Hindus, Buddhists, Bons and Jains. While Hindus believe Mount Kailash to be the abode of Lord Shiva, Buddhists believe that Mount Kailash is the home of the buddha Cakrasaṃvara (also known as Demchok) who represents supreme bliss. For Bon followers, Kailash is the very place where their founder Shenrab came down from heaven. In Jainism, Kailash is believed to be Mount Asthapada which the place where its founder Rishabhdev attained freedom and rebirth. For pilgrims, Kailash-Mansarovar is a pilgrimage that one must undertake at least once in theeir lifetime. Kailash-Mansarovar region is also the source of four major river systems of Asia - Karnali, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Indus. The journey to Kailash-Mansarovar is arduous yet rewarding. Travelers undergo an enlightening transformation, which is difficuult to describe, but can only be felt. The Kailash-Mansarovar journey begins with flights to Nepalgunj and then to Simikot airstrip in Humla. From Simkot, a heli shuttle will take you to Nepal-China border at Hilsa. Ater completing immigration formalities, our Chinese team will drive you to Taklakot where you spend two nights for acclimatization. From there, you drive to the banks of the holy Manasarovar lake before continuing to Darchen from where your three-day trek aorund Mount Kailash begin. After completion of Kora, you will be driven back to Nepal-Tibet border and flown back to Kathmandu where your holiday ends.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival Kathmandu (1400m)

Welcome to Nepal. Our representative will be at the airport to welcome your and transfer you to your hotel. Remaining time is free for independent activities. During dinner, a short briefing about your trip will be organized at your hotel.

Day 2
Kathmandu Sightseeing and flight to Nepalgunj (150m)

After breakfast, you will be taken for a sightseeing of Pashupatinath and Guheshwari Temple. Return to your hotel after sightseeing. In the afternoon, you will be driven to the airport for a flight to Nepalgunj. The flight takes around 50 minutes. Upon arrival in Nepalgunj airport, check into your hotel. Remaining time is free for independent activities.

Day 3
Fly to Simkot (2900m) – Approx 1 hr

Your will be driven to the airport for flight to Simikot after early breakfast at our hotel. Flights to airfields in the mountainous region are operated only in the mornings as weather there deteriorates once the day progresses. The flight takes about an hour. The flight offers your bird’s eye view of beautiful landscape, rivers, and snowcapped mountains. Simikot is a small STOL airfield that serves as the gateway to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar. Upon arrival at Simikot, check into your lodge. You can spend the day exploring Simikot and surroundings.

Day 4
Fly to Hilsa (3,700m) and drive to Taklakot (3,900m) – 20 mins flight, 20 mins walk and about 45 minutes driving

You will be entering China today. After breakfast at your hotel, board a chopper for a flight to Nepal-China border town of Hilsa. The flight takes around 20 minutes. From there, walk for around half an hour on a flat land to the banks of Karnali River which originates in Mount Kailash. After crossing the river you will come at the Chinese immigration office. After completing immigration formalities, board a waiting car/bus and start driving toward Taklakot. A drive of about one and half hours on the Tibetan plateau will take you to your night’s halt at Taklakot – a bustling Chinese town. Accommodation will be on dormitory set up.

Day 5
Rest day in Taklakot

You will spend an extra night in Taklakot to acclimatize to high altitude. You can explore the market area, do some shopping spend the time resting at your guesthouse.

Day 6
Drive to Manasarovar Lake (4,550m) – Approx 3-4 hrs

Today, you will drive to the sacred Manasarovar Lake. A drive of around 70 kilometers on the arid Tibetan plateau will take you to Rakshas Tal. From the lake, you get the first view of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake. On your right lies the beautiful Gurla Mandhata Parbat. A drive of around 25 kilometers from Rakshas Tal will take you to the holy Mansarovar Lake. Upon arrival at Mansarovar Lake, check into your guesthouse.

Day 7
Drive to Darchen (4575m)

You will be taken for the Parikrama, or circumambulation, of the holy lake today. It takes about three hours to complete the journey on your car. You will also stop at an appropriate place to offer Pooja and take a holy dip at the lake. Fill up the sacred water in your pet bottles to take home as Prasad. We will then drive to Darchen. The distance is only about 53 kilometers and it will take around two hours to complete the distance.

Day 8
Drive to Yama Dwar and Trek to Deraphuk (4,860m)

Your Parikrama or circumambulation of Mount Kailash begins today. After breakfast, we will drive to Tarboche for the visit of Yama Dwar. This is the starting point of your trek. The distance from Yama Dwar to Deraphuk is around 12 kilometers and takes about 6-7 hrs. You will stay at a guesthouse in Deraphuk that overlooks the northern face of Mount Kailash.

Day 9
Trek to Zuthulphuk (4670m) via Dolma Pass (5630m)

Resume your walk after having breakfast at your guesthouse. The walk today will be difficult and challenging as you will be gaining more altitude today and climb to the highest point of this trek – Dolma Pass. Start early as the day involves about 22 kilometers of walking and takes around 8-9 hours. The difficult part is the climb to the pass. Once you reach the pass, enjoy the view of the surreal Tibetan plateau. A descent of about an hour from the pass will take you to a leveled trerraion on the river bank. A short walk form here will take you to your night's halt at Zuthulphuk.

Day 10
Trek to Darchen and drive to Taklakot and enter Nepal – Approx 6 hrs

Your Kailash Parikrama will end today. A walk of about two hours form Zuthulphuk will take you to Darchen. Upon arrival in Darchen, board a waiting car/bus and start driving toward Taklakot and then to Nepal-China border. After completing immigration formalities, enter Nepal and stay at Hilsa. You will be airlifted directly to Simkot today itself if choppers are available.

Day 11
Fly to Simikot, then to Nepalgunj and further to Kathmandu

After early breakfast, board a chopper to Simikot from Hilsa. Upon arrival in Simikot, catch the next flight to Nepalgunj. After taking lunch at Nepalgunj, board the next available flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel.

Day 12
Departure

You have free time until your flight time. Our representative will provide you ‘Kailash Yatra Completion Certificate’ and drive you to the airport some three hours before your flight time so that you will not have to rush for customs and immigration formalities. Bon voyage!

Important Information

Risk and Liabilities:
We will spare no effort to make your journey smooth and pleasant as possible. However, please be understood that the entire program in Tibet is conducted strictly under the rules and regulations of China Tibet Tourism Bureau, People's Army and Foreign Affairs. Therefore, West Himalaya Treks & Expeditions and its related organizations will not be responsible for any change in the itinerary due to unavoidable circumstances such as government restriction, landslide, road blockage due to flood, snow, and political unrest, cancellation of flight, delay due to shortage of motor vehicles in Tibet, sickness or accident. Any extra cost incurred due to such incidents shall be borne by traveler themselves.
Documents:
Two PP photographs and passport having validity of a minimum of six months. Participants above 50 years of age should produce a normal health certificate from your physician.
Fitness:
No specific level of fitness is required as this is not a trek but a tour program. Anybody can join this Yatra if they think themselves fit and have strong willpower. People suffering cardiac or respiratory problems or taking medicines for heart ailments, diabtes or blood pressure are suggested to conulst their doctor. Morning and evening walks, jogging, stretching, meditation and regular exercise make the journey comfortable for all.
Clothings:
As the temperature varies greatly between day and night (from max. 20 degrees Celsius to min. -16 degrees Celsius), one should prepare accordingly.
Clothings/Equipment:
Clothing/Equipment to bring: Woolen gloves, Balaclava, Sun hat, Thermal wear, Water bottle, Woolen socks, Towel, Light Jacket, Sunglasses, Sun cream, Torch with extra batteries/bulbs, Muffler, Mask, Raincoat, Sweater, Shirt/T-shirt & Trekking shoes
Insurance:
Full travel insurance coverage for medicine, Helicopter evacuation in case of emergency, lost of belongings, and trip cancellation is strongly recommended
Booking:
Minimum 30 days advanced booking is necessary to arrange visa and travel permits. Members must deposit 50% of the package cost while booking the trip.
Chinese Visa Application:
Your original passport and two pp size photos should reach our office a week before your travel date for Chinese visa formalities.
Cancelation Rules:

1. All notice of cancellation must be sent to our office in written.

2. Verbal cancellations will not be entertained.

3. If cancelation notice is sent 21 days prior to the departure date, the company will levy 30% cancellatoin charge.

4. If cancelation notice is sent 15 days prior to the departure date, the company will levy 50% cancellatoin charge.

5. Deposit will not be refund if cancellation is sent 7 days prior to the departure date

6. Above rules are applicable as per the rules and regulation of China Tibet Tourism Bureau and (CIPSC) China Indian pilgrims service Center.

7. Schedule is subject to change under unavoidable circumstances. West Himalaya Treks & Expeditions reserves right to change date and cancel trip in case of unfavorable situations.
