Overview

The Dolpo Barbung Valley Trek offers you the authentic off-beat trekking experience by taking you to the relatively unexplored areas in the Lower Dolpo region. The trail passes through some of the astonishing human settlements in the Himalayas like Kagkot, Seri and Longkung which are rich in Bon and Buddhism heritage. People here practice the purest from of Tibetan Buddhism which cannot be experienced even in Tibet. Trekkers can see numerous chhortens and ancient Buddhist and Bon monasteries, mani walls etc throughout the trail. They pass through high Himalayan passes adorned with prayer flag and cairns. The trek provides the best view of Churen, Putha Himchuli and other peaks of Dhaulagiri range. At some places, the Barbung River gorge is so narrow that it seems there is nothing to separate these villages from the Dhaulagiri range. Lower Dolpo mostly comprises of birch and pine forests. Trees, however, start getting dwarf as the altitude rises and make way for small bushes. Going further, one will be enthralled by rugged and arid rocky landscape. The trek begins with a scenic flight to Juphal airstrip of Dolpo and goes upstream of the Bheri River till Laisi Camp. The popular Lower Dolpo Trek branches to the left from this point following Tarap River. However, the Barbung Valley trek continues upsteam of the river which is known by the name Barbung henceforth. Passing by villages of Kagkot and Seri, from where a trail to the even remote Mukot village branches off, the trail continues along the the river to Chap CHu where it meets the Great Himalaya Trail and enters the magnificent valley of Dho-Trap via Chanla Pass. From here, the trail climbs two high passes of Numala and Bagala in the next three days to reach Ringmo seated on the shores of Phoksundo Lake. It then follows Suligad River, which drains the majestic lake, and reaches Sulighat and then climbs to Juphal after crossing Bheri River.
