GHT-Kanchanjunga

This is the eastern-most section of the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) in Nepal and the beginning point of this epic walking trail. This section begins from northern base camp of Mt Kanchanjunga and moves through high Himalayan passes, settlements and meadows to the Makalu region where the next section begins. The trail to the Kanchanjunga base camp begins from Suketar airport – a STOL airfield serving Taplejung district – and passes through the villages of Sekathum, Gyabala, Ghunsa, Kambachen and Lhonak to reach the base camp. From the base camp, the trail then retreats to Ghunsa village and climbs a high pass to enter Olangchung Gola – an ancient village of Walung people who follow traditional Tibetan Buddhism. It then enters Makalu Valley after crossing Lumba Sumba Pass. The Kanchanjunga section exits the GHT from the village of Hongon. Trekkers walk through the villages of Barun Dobhan and Pathibhara to Num from where they catch a jeep to Tumlingar airport to catch a flight to Kathmandu.
